General Job Brief:

This is a full-time faculty position. The Instructor's responsibility is to recruit music major, music minor, or new non-music major students to begin a Pep Band beginning Fall 2020 Semester. 

Beginning August 1, 2020 the Instructor's primary duty is to build a start-up band program.  This will include Pep Band rehearsals, scheduled performances, teaching other Band courses, lessons, and misc. music class. Instructor is responsible to recruit 10 or more new students each additional year to build this program into fully functioning Marching Band, Concert Band, etc.  Initial Course instruction will include: Drum Line, Pep Band, Applied Lessons, and other music classes as negotiated with Music Department Chair.


Typical Duties(The following duties are those typically required to do the job, but are not intended to include all duties that comprise the job content. Typical duties are intended to illustrate the diverse and levels of difficulty of the job.)


Director of bands:


  • Director of Pep Band, Drum Line and other Bands as assigned by Music Department Chair.
  • Supervision and instruction of students in rehearsals, classrooms, private lessons, and performance settings.
  • Development of Band Program. In accordance with Music Department create Band Concentration program and appropriate courses for Band Program. Develop curriculum and syllabi for newly integrated courses and other assigned music teaching responsibilities.
  • Identify Adjunct Instructors for Applied Lessons instruction for Band instruments.
  • Band Instruments: provide maintenance and upkeep with school owned drum and band instruments. Provide resources for band instrument rentals.


  • Recruit new students to Band program (10 or more new students each year).
  • Set up recruiting visits with perspective students
  • Work closely with Recruitment team
  • Generate leads by making calls, sending emails, presence at recruiting events, building relationship with high school/junior college band directors.



  • Teaching a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester. Applied Lessons may exceed beyond the 12 credit hours.
  • Evaluation of subject matter taught and maintenance of student records.
  • Preparation performances and grading of exams.
  • Developing and enhancing knowledge and teaching skills of the respective discipline through attendance at conferences, seminars, and/or workshops.
  • Maintaining office hours to advise and assist students.
  • Participation in departmental and university-wide meetings.

Education and Experience(Classification is typically expected to possess.)

  • Earned Masters or higher degree in music or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Appropriate experience with Pep Band, Drum Line, Marching Band.
  • Experience and knowledge of wind instruments.
  • Higher education teaching experience in band performance and conducting.
  • Established record of success in recruiting at Collegiate level.
  • Ability to perform and teach multiple genres of music.  ie. Pop, Jazz, Classical, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and administrative leadership at university level.
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills.
  • Experience with various instructional delivery systems including integration of technology into coursework.
  • Evidence of Christian commitment with interest in and ability to integrate faith and learning
  • Potential for scholarly contribution.
  • Teacher certification and successful K-12 school teaching experience is helpful.
